"Solitary Is the Age-Old Tree (A Triolet Poem)" from "Birthright: Poems for the Journey" by Devi Nina Bingham

Solitary is the Age-Old Tree

Solitary is the age-old tree
that swells beneath the earth and sky,
conveying God's whispers on the breeze,
rolling with the wind and pitch of the sea.
For years upon years like a gnarled marquis
it witnessed children's play
and stooped over those who died.
It even took the poison so you could breathe,
yet the companionless tree has never asked why.
